Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral involved in immune function, wound healing, and hundreds of enzymatic processes. It is commonly taken for immune support, particularly around cold and flu season.

Zinc's role in immune function is well established, and correcting a deficiency clearly matters. Evidence that zinc lozenges may modestly shorten the duration of a common cold when started early is reasonable, though not dramatic. Routine high-dose supplementation in people who are not deficient has less clear benefit.

High doses over time can interfere with copper absorption, causing a secondary deficiency, and can cause nausea. Zinc is a case where more is not better, and long-term high doses are counterproductive.

If you are taking high-dose zinc long-term, a doctor can advise on balancing it with copper. Persistent symptoms you are hoping zinc will address (frequent infections, poor healing) warrant proper investigation rather than indefinite supplementation.

Inexpensive, sold as a monthly or multi-month supply.
