Vitamin D3 + K2

Vitamin D3 supports bone health, immune function and muscle function, and is one of the few supplements with broad, mainstream backing, largely because deficiency is genuinely common, particularly in northern climates and darker skin tones. It is often paired with vitamin K2, which helps direct calcium toward bones rather than soft tissue.

Vitamin D's role in bone health is well established, and supplementation is recommended by the NHS during autumn and winter months in the UK for most of the population. Evidence for benefits beyond correcting deficiency (such as broad disease prevention in already-sufficient people) is more mixed. The D3 plus K2 pairing has a reasonable mechanistic rationale, though evidence for the combination is less extensive than for D3 alone.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble and can accumulate, so very high doses over time risk toxicity (raised calcium levels). Sticking to recommended amounts unless a blood test and doctor indicate otherwise is sensible. K2 can interact with blood-thinning medication.

If you take warfarin or other blood thinners, speak to a doctor before taking K2, as it affects clotting. A simple blood test can confirm whether you are actually deficient in vitamin D, which is more precise than guessing at a dose. Discuss high-dose supplementation with a doctor rather than self-prescribing large amounts.

Inexpensive, sold as a monthly or multi-month supply. One of the better-value supplements when deficiency is present.
