Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy uses a concentration of platelets drawn from your own blood, then re-injected into an area to encourage tissue repair. It is used in orthopedic medicine for injuries, in dermatology for skin rejuvenation, and for hair restoration.

Evidence is moderate and mixed depending on the specific use. It has reasonable support for certain orthopedic applications, such as chronic tendon injury. Evidence for hair loss treatment and general aesthetic use is more limited, and results vary considerably between studies, providers and preparation techniques.

Infection, pain and swelling at the injection site, and notably inconsistent results, since PRP preparation and injection technique vary significantly between providers, making outcomes hard to predict.

Ask specifically whether your condition has supporting evidence for PRP, since the evidence strength differs considerably by indication. A provider who cannot point to relevant evidence for your specific use case warrants extra scrutiny.

Priced per session, and often requires multiple sessions to see a meaningful effect, which adds up over a course of treatment.

Orthopedic and dermatology literature on PRP efficacy, reviewed separately by indication. Educational information only.
