An eating pattern built around vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, olive oil, fish and moderate dairy, with limited red meat and processed food. It is one of the most extensively studied dietary patterns in relation to long-term health.
Large observational studies and randomised trials (notably the PREDIMED trial) link this pattern to reduced cardiovascular events, better metabolic markers, and lower all-cause mortality. It is consistently among the highest-rated dietary patterns in independent evidence reviews.
Minimal risk for most people. Cost and access to fresh produce and quality olive oil can be a practical barrier, and it is not automatically calorie-appropriate for weight management without attention to portions.
If you have a condition requiring specific dietary restriction (kidney disease, certain allergies), adapt the pattern with professional guidance rather than following it generically.
Varies. Can be comparable to a standard diet, or higher if relying heavily on fish and specialty ingredients.
