Cryotherapy

Whole-body cryotherapy exposes the body to extreme cold, typically minus 110 to minus 140 degrees Celsius, for two to four minutes in a specialised chamber. It is marketed for muscle recovery, reduced inflammation and mood benefits, and has become popular in both sports and general wellness settings.

There is modest evidence supporting reduced perceived muscle soreness after intense exercise when cryotherapy is used shortly afterwards. Evidence for broader claims, such as fat loss, anti-ageing or significant mood improvement, is weak and largely based on small or short studies.

Frostbite and skin burns from improper exposure or faulty equipment. The extreme cold triggers a genuine cardiovascular stress response, which is a meaningful consideration for anyone with existing heart or circulation issues.

Avoid cryotherapy if you have uncontrolled heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, Raynaud's disease, cold urticaria (an allergic reaction to cold), or are pregnant. Speak to a doctor first if you have any cardiovascular condition.

Priced per session, often sold as a discounted course of multiple visits.
