Consistent Sleep Schedule

Going to bed and waking at roughly the same time every day, including weekends, keeps your circadian rhythm stable. This single habit influences hormone timing, appetite regulation, mood and how restorative your sleep actually is, often more than total hours slept.

Studies on sleep regularity (not just duration) link a stable schedule to better cardiometabolic markers and lower all-cause mortality risk, independent of how many hours were slept. Variable bed and wake times, even with adequate total sleep, are associated with worse outcomes.

None inherent to the habit itself. Shift workers and parents of young children may find strict consistency unrealistic, the goal is to minimise variability where possible, not achieve perfection.

If you maintain a consistent schedule but still wake unrefreshed, snore heavily, or feel excessively sleepy during the day, this may indicate a sleep disorder such as sleep apnoea and warrants assessment.
