Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a compound the body makes in small amounts and uses as an antioxidant and in energy metabolism. It is supplemented for antioxidant support, blood sugar and nerve health, and is sometimes grouped with NAD+ and cellular health topics for its metabolic role.

The best-evidenced use is for diabetic nerve pain, where ALA has moderate supporting research, and it has some evidence for improving insulin sensitivity. Evidence for general antioxidant or anti-ageing benefit in healthy people is weaker.

Generally well tolerated. Can lower blood sugar, which matters if you take diabetes medication, and high doses may cause digestive upset. Rare reports of it affecting thyroid function.

If you take medication for diabetes, speak to a doctor before use, as ALA can lower blood sugar and doses may need adjusting. Nerve symptoms should be properly diagnosed rather than self-treated.

Inexpensive to moderate, sold as a monthly supply.
